Safe Schools Alaska is dedicated to strengthening school safety by combining professional campus safety strategies with student empowerment. Through our training programs and the We’ve Got Your Back® Student Safety Program (WGYB), we help schools develop environments where safety is not just a policy, but also a shared culture. Our approach builds situational awareness, emotional intelligence, and life skills that prepare students to recognize risks, support their peers, and make confident decisions when it matters most.
Situational awareness, crisis prevention, and safety training are life skills which require ongoing practice.
By training educators, empowering students, and fostering collaboration within school communities, Safe Schools Alaska helps schools move beyond reactive safety measures and toward a proactive culture of awareness, responsibility, and resilience. When students and educators work together, safety becomes stronger, communities become healthier, and schools become places where everyone truly has each other’s back.

As schools and after-school programs nationwide seek safer and more effective ways to prepare students and staff for critical incidents, the demand for trauma-informed, mindful, and developmentally appropriate crisis response education has reached new importance. This involves meeting students at their level, and introducing key concepts of situational awareness and safety in ways students find relatable.
Online Training Modules
The Kimball Learning Center is the home for online courses that support in-person training for both educators and students. Safe Schools Alaska now includes a customized bundle of 7 individual modules, which cover a range of important safety topics.
As you begin implementing the We’ve Got Your Back® Student Safety Program in your own school districts, know that we are here to support you and collaborate with you every step of the way. By teaching and modeling these strategies, you are not only strengthening the culture of safety in your school but also making a lasting difference in the lives of students and the communities they will grow to serve.

A Message from Our Founder
School safety is not created by policies alone. It is built through people, preparation, and a shared culture of awareness and responsibility. Through our work with Safe Schools Alaska (SSA), our mission is to help schools develop stronger, safer learning environments by combining professional campus safety practices with the power of student leadership.
For more than three decades working in law enforcement, crisis management, and school safety, I have seen that the most effective safety systems are those that engage the entire community. Adults play a critical role in prevention, protection, and response, but students themselves are often the first to see, hear, and sense when something is not right. When students are trained, empowered, and supported, they become an extraordinary force for prevention, awareness, and positive school culture.
That philosophy is the foundation of the We’ve Got Your Back® Student Safety Program (WGYB). Through this program, we help schools develop Student Safety Councils and Student Cohorts that learn how to recognize risks, support one another, and contribute to a safer school environment. These programs are designed to be engaging, trauma-informed, and developmentally appropriate while building real-life competencies.
Our training focuses on developing the Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) that students need to succeed not only in school safety, but throughout their lives. Students learn practical tools that strengthen situational awareness, emotional intelligence, and personal responsibility. These life skills help young people become more observant, more compassionate, more confident in decision-making, and more prepared to respond effectively when challenges arise.
At the same time, Safe Schools Alaska works directly with school leaders and staff to strengthen campus safety systems, align safety planning with best practices, and ensure that prevention, preparedness, and response capabilities are continually improving.
The ultimate goal is simple but powerful: Build a culture of safety in schools–one where students, educators, and communities work together to protect and support one another. When we empower students, train staff, and create shared ownership of safety, we move beyond compliance and begin building resilient school communities.
Together, we can create schools where safety, awareness, compassion, and leadership are part of everyday life.
